How to behave in a shop...

First off, let me start this by saying i sold multimedia products for about 3 years.
Stuff we sold; TV's, camera's (compact, video and reflex), pc's, laptop's, phones,...

In short, when u work in a shop u get more cash the more u sell (pretty logical) and the more accessories u sell (high profit).

Now, in my shop we didn't get extra's as individuals but as a group, so we wouldn't get all competitive about customers, personally i think this is the best way to create a good and friendly atmosphere amongst colleagues.

Anyway, seeing a lot of customers each day, i decided to make list of things to remember when you're buying something in a shop where the sales guys are more like personal shoppers (so they welcome you and guide you through the process of buying something, giving you advice each step of the way).

Remember, this does NOT apply to everyone ;)

List of stuff to remember (I won't be putting he/she all the time and just use he/him, no disrespect to the ladies):

Don't think just because he talked with you for 20min that he's your new best friend.
I got this a LOT, I start giving advice, talking, going over all the options, see what the customer actually needs instead of what he wants... problem is, after that whole process, a lot of customers feel like they made a new friend instead of thinking that i'm just doing my job... they get too familiar and then get angry when i say i can't go to their home to fix their tv... they start accusing me of giving bad service...

Don't start telling him your life story, he has a lot of other stuff to do (paperwork and whatnot)

Always remember that his job is to sell stuff and not to teach you how it all works.
Ok, there are some exceptions here, when there aren't a lot of customers in the shop and the one i'm working with is treating me with respect i'll try and get the camera out of the box, turn it on, configure it completely for immediate use and show them the big picture of what it can do... but, if you've got a line of 10 people waiting behind you, don't force the guy to explain it all... There's always a nice manual in the box that explains everything in detail.

Which brings me to the next point. Read the manual!
I know it's hard, boring and when you just got your new camera/phone/tv you just want to try it out and learn by doing, and that's all fine. But if you don't know something, please don't call the shop to ask for the guy that sold you the device and ask him how a specific setting works. Just get out the manual and search for it, saves you phone costs and saves the sales guy some time.

And last but not least, if you have a lot of technical knowledge about the products in the store you're shopping, don't start correcting him, don't act as if you know better... as 95% of the time, you'll be wrong! Except ofcourse when you're 100% sure and you have some actual proof that he is misinforming you. This can happen with someone who just started working there, but seriously, if you think that the guy is lying... think again before you correct him. Saves you both an embarrassing moment.

Don't get me wrong, I loved working there, loved the social contact and all the people ... but now it's time to move on :)
